Written by on 22nd January 2025

People who rely on a Market Harborough charity to maintain their independence have expressed their devastation it is to close.

Shopmobility has been unable to find alternative premises, after being given notice to leave Roman Way Community Centre.

The charity has been renting out mobility scooters and wheelchairs for over 25 years and is used by many people as a way of getting around the town centre.

Jenny Garland is disabled and has been using the charity’s scooters for the past eight years.

She told HFM she and many others are devastated the service will no longer being available:

The charity will close early next month

The charity was served notice to leave by Leicestershire County Council, which is selling Roman Way Community Centre and will close its doors on February 4th.

The authority says it provided support to identify a number of possible alternative locations for Shopmobility, but unfortunately the efforts proved unsuccessful.

Harborough District Council also worked with the charity to identify alternative premises, but none were suitable.

Cllr Phil Knowles, leader of Harborough District Council, spoke to HFM:
