Harborough Council has unanimously backed a campaign to reduce the impact of fireworks on animals.

A motion by Leader Phil King was put to a meeting of the Full Council in response to concerns from the RSPCA and residents about the effects they have on pets and livestock.

The Council will now urge suppliers to stock quieter fireworks, urge organisers of all public displays to advertise them well in advance, call on government to limit the maximum noise level of fireworks and promote an awareness campaign about the impact of fireworks on animal welfare and vulnerable people.

Harborough Council has become one of the first authorities in the country to back the RSPCA campaign, which was launched after 58% of owners polled by the charity said their animals show signs of distress during the fireworks season, prompting the launch of the charity’s ‘Bang Out Of Order’ campaign.
