Taxi operator Uber has pledged to talk to Harborough District Council after concerns were raised about its drivers operating illegally in Market Harborough.

Town-based drivers have complained about Uber cabs parking in the town centre rank and claim some drivers are carrying out illicit cash-in-hand work.

Although out-of-town taxis can legally pick up and drop off here, they are not permitted to use the rank and must be pre-booked.

Local cabbies say the actions are impacting on their livelihoods.

An Uber spokesperson told HFM: “Uber is committed to safety and raising standards across the industry.

“All private hire trips in the UK must be pre-booked and private hire drivers are not permitted to use taxi ranks.

“We are reaching out to Harborough District Council to discuss steps we can take to address any concerns.”

Harborough MP Neil O’Brien has met with town-based taxi drivers to discuss their concerns and raised them with the council, which says it understands the frustrations of local taxi drivers and has pledged to undertake surveillance.
