Tributes have been paid following the death of highly-respected Harborough district councillor David Gair.

He had represented Lutterworth East since 2023 and was also a long-serving member of Lutterworth Town Council.

Council leader Phil Knowles says the Labour politician will be remembered for his dedication to the community:

Cllr David Gair

A minute’s silence was held in memory of Cllr Gair before last night’s meeting of the council’s planning committee, which he was a member of.

The Union flag has also been lowered to half-mast at the council’s Symington Building as a mark of respect.

Harborough District Council said it was saddened to hear of his passing, describing Cllr Gair as a passionate representative of his community.

Following his election to the district council, he was appointed chair of the Audit and Standards Committee and also served on the Planning Committee.

Chief Executive John Richardson said Cllr Gair quickly became a highly respected member of the council, praising his commitment and support in his role as committee chair, and sending condolences to his family and friends.

Lutterworth Town Council also paid tribute, saying he had served the community tirelessly for many years and would be deeply missed for his dedication and approachable nature.

Fellow Lutterworth Labour councillor Jim Knight described him as “one of the most wonderful of people”, highlighting his knowledge, experience, quick wit and sense of humour.

Cllr Buddy Anderson, vice-chairman of the council, said Cllr Gair was “a staunch Labour man with passionate local views” and, although they were from different political parties, he came to know him as “a genuinely nice person”.

He added that his death had come as a shock and said it was “difficult to comprehend” he would no longer be at the council.

Details of tributes and funeral arrangements will be confirmed at a later date in line with the family’s wishes.
