Time Running Out To Comment On Proposed Tip Closure

Written by on 12th January 2024

There is less than two weeks left for you to have your say on the controversial plan to shut Market Harborough tip.

Over 3.500 people have already taken part in a public consultation into the proposed closure, along with two others in Leicestershire.

The County Council has proposed the closures and to reduce opening hours of all its recycling and household waste sites during summer months, to save cash.

There are around 75,000 visits yearly to Market Harborough’s tip on Riverside and residents would be forced to take rubbish to the tip in Kibworth if the closure went ahead.

County councillor Phil King told HFM he is concerned about the impact on highway safety, if more people have to drive to use to the site off the A6:

Leicestershire County Council has previously said a full traffic impact study would be carried out.

Councillor Blake Pain, cabinet member for the environment and the green agenda, said: “We’ve had a great response so far from residents having their say and I’m encouraging as many people as possible to give their views as we enter the final two weeks.

“Our financial pressures are the toughest we’ve ever faced and we need to make savings wherever we can. If approved, these proposals will help us reduce our costs. Please complete the consultation before it closes.”

The consultation is open until Wednesday 24 January 2024 and can be found on the council’s Have Your Say page.
