A bid to create a new community centre and café in Thurnby has been handed £250,000 by the government.
It is one of the first 21 projects to benefit from the new £150m Community Ownership Fund, part of the levelling-up agenda, announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in yesterday’s budget.
St Luke’s Church is set to create Thurnby Community Hub next to Manor Park in the village, by redeveloping and extending the unused pavilion there.
Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton said: “This was a fantastic bid, with an extremely dedicated group for volunteers.
“I know that the Community Hub at St Luke’s is going to be an incredible asset for the community in Thurnby.
“The community stretches into some of the most deprived areas of Harborough, and the Hub will provide a critical role for outreach services, civic education and community development.
“I’m delighted that I was able to play some part in this funding being released – which will enhance the village of Thurnby no end.”
