Taxis Firm Closes After Over 50 Years In Market Harborough

A long-standing Market Harborough taxi firm has ceased trading after running into financial difficulties.

Murphys Taxis, which was first established in the town in the early 1970s, has closed with the loss of a number of jobs and is set to enter voluntary liquidation.

The company said it explored all possible options to keep the business operating, but was unable to find a viable way forward.

Most of Murphys’ drivers were self-employed subcontractors and have now been left without work, along with around four full-time equivalent staff who were directly employed by the firm.

In a statement to HFM, the company said: “Despite extensive efforts by the director to explore all possible options for the continuation of the business, including alternative operating models and solutions aimed at avoiding disruption to service users, it has not been possible to identify a sustainable path forward.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. The company has proudly served its local community for many years and has built strong relationships with customers, partners and stakeholders during that time.

“Murphys Taxis would like to place on record its sincere thanks to the community and to its customers for their outstanding loyalty and support over many years. The company is also grateful to its staff and drivers for their dedication and commitment.”

Murphys, which also operated in Lutterworth, was based at the corner of King’s Head Place and Roman Way, where its vehicles remain parked outside the former offices.
