A swan rescued from a sewage treatment works will be spending Christmas at Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital after becoming trapped for four days.

The male bird was discovered weak and waterlogged in an overflow tank at the site in Stoke Albany, near Desborough.

Staff at the sewage works raised the alarm after noticing the swan was struggling to escape.

Rescuers from the Kibworth-based Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital attended the scene and were able to safely remove the bird, which was suffering from exhaustion after being unable to get out of the water.

The swan is now receiving care at the hospital, where staff are helping him recover his strength and waterproofing.

It is hoped he will be fit enough to be released back into the wild in the New Year.
