Supermarket Evacuated After Fire Alert

Shoppers were evacuated from Sainsbury’s in Market Harborough after a fire alert.

Fire crews were called to the supermarket on Springfield Street just before 1pm on Saturday, after smoke was seen coming out of an equipment room adjoining the store.

Firefighters from Market Harborough and Rothwell were sent to the scene and staff evacuated customers as a precaution to the car park outside.

No fire was found and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service say the smoke was caused by a fault in a bio mass system, which caused the boiler to be backed up with smoke and trigger the alarms.

Crews monitored the incident until an engineer arrived to deal with the issue.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “Our Market Harborough store was temporarily closed for a brief time on Saturday.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.”
