Solar Panel Plan For Harborough Innovation Centre

Written by on 7th February 2024

Over 200 solar panels are set to be installed on the roof of Harborough Innovation Centre.

They would generate enough electricity to power the building off Leicester Road, which is home to over 50 small businesses.

Harborough District Council is set to award a contract for the installation next week at a cost of over £50,000.

It says the green initiative will save over £600,000 in energy costs of 20 years, based on current energy pricing and reduce the centre’s carbon emissions by 16 tonnes a year.

Cllr Darren Woodiwiss, Cabinet lead for Environmental and Climate Change, said: “We have been looking at how we can further reduce emissions from our buildings to help us to meet the council’s 2030 net zero carbon commitment.

“The Harborough Innovation Centre has a huge roof and is the most suitable of council-owned buildings for this particular project. It’s absolutely right that we press ahead to ensure that we start to gain the associated environmental and financial benefits.”

The project would support the council’s commitment to become a net zero carbon council by 2030 as far as is possible within financial constraints and comes after the announcement the authority could invest in a solar farm:
