Market Harborough railway station is like a ghost town this morning as the biggest strike in decades gets underway.

Staff at East Midlands Railway are among around 50,000 workers nationwide taking part in the action.

Further strikes will take place on Thursday and Saturday as members of the RMT Union walk out in a row over pay, jobs and conditions.

People are advised not to travel by train, as services are severely disrupted today and will be for the rest of the week.

Managing Director of East Midlands Railway, Will Rogers said: “We are extremely disappointed the RMT have decided to strike on the 21, 23 and 25 June.  This is the wrong decision for the railway and communities we serve.

“There will be changes to our normal timetable and some parts of our network will have no train services on strike days and other lines will have a reduced level of service. I would urge all customers to think carefully about their journeys next week – and make alternative arrangements if possible.”
