Public Inquiry Held Into Crematorium Plan

A planning inspector will decide whether a new crematorium for Hindu and Sikh funerals can be built in the Harborough district after a public inquiry took place.

Harborough District Council refused planning permission last year for the scheme at Scraptoft Lodge Farm in Scraptoft but the developer, CDS Group, appealed against the decision.

The proposal involves demolishing a late-19th century farmhouse and outbuildings and replacing them with a purpose-built crematorium complex. The plans include two chapels, which could host up to six services a day between them.

Councillors rejected the application in April, arguing the development would be too large and out of keeping with the surrounding area.

The proposals attracted a mixed response from the public, with 56 letters of support and 30 objections.

Supporters said the crematorium would improve inclusivity and provide facilities for faith groups currently having to travel long distances for funeral services. Opponents raised concerns about the design, parking provision and the potential impact of additional traffic from funeral processions.

The appeal was heard at a public inquiry held at Harborough District Council’s headquarters yesterday.

The inspector will consider the evidence from both sides before making a final decision on whether the crematorium can go ahead.
