Pub Bans Playing Music or Taking Calls On Phone Speakers

Written by on 18th August 2026

Customers at The Sugar Loaf pub in Market Harborough are being asked to keep their phones and tablets on silent under a new JD Wetherspoon policy.

The pub chain has banned customers from playing music out loud or taking calls on speaker, saying noise from mobile devices has become an increasing problem and is driving people “nuts”.

Customers at the High Street venue are being asked to use earphones instead, with staff told to use “common sense” when enforcing the policy.

Wetherspoon says customers will not automatically be asked to leave if they break the rules, although managers could take that step if someone refuses to turn their device down.

The company, which operates hundreds of pubs across the UK, does not play music in its venues.

Chief executive Tim Martin has previously described Wetherspoon pubs as “an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation”.
