Preparations Ahead Of Remembrance Events

Final preparations are underway for Remembrance events taking place this weekend.

In Market Harborough, the main ceremony will be held tomorrow on The Square, following a service at St Dionysius Church and a parade through the town.

Today, a short service will take place beside the WW1 Memorial Portico at Rosewood Manor Care Home on Coventry Road.

Stewart Harrison, chairman of the Royal British Legion in Market Harborough, told HFM the ceremonies are an important way to honour those who served:

Great Bowden Academy pupils have created a special book of poems and prayers

Meanwhile, children from Great Bowden Academy have created a special book of poems and prayers to raise money for the Poppy Appeal.

Written by pupils in Classes 3 and 4, it’s available to buy outside Quinns Bookshop in Market Harborough this afternoon (Saturday) and outside St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Great Bowden before tomorrow’s Remembrance service.

Headteacher Mrs Rebecca Blagburn added: “We are incredibly proud of Class 3 and 4. Their poems and prayers show real thoughtfulness and empathy. It is wonderful to see our pupils using their creativity to support such an important cause.”

On Armistice Day (Tuesday) a short Service of Remembrance will take place in Market Harborough at the entrance to the Memorial Gardens on The Square, to mark the moment when the guns fell silent on the Western Front in 1918.

The ceremony will include schoolchildren reading poems and a two-minute silence at 11am – the start and end marked with the firing of a maroon, with wreaths placed on the Memorial Gardens gate.
