Patient Dies From Listeria

A Leicestershire hospital patient is among those who have died in the national listeria outbreak.

The death is linked to the same provider of pre-packed sandwiches and salads.

The Leicester hospital where the patient died has not been named, although is part of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Meanwhile, the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, which operates St Luke’s Hospital in Market Harborough, has been named as one of 43 trusts who were supplied by The Good Food Chain, which is at the centre of the outbreak.

All the products have now been withdrawn.

A spokesman for the Trust told Hfm: “As soon as we were made aware of the outbreak we removed all supplies from the ‘Good Food Chain’ supplier from all our sites, including St Luke’s Hospital, and ceased using this supplier.

“We have been using food from other sources in conjunction with the local Environmental Health Officer since then. We are working closely with Public Health England during this ongoing investigation.”

There have been five reported deaths in recent days at hospitals across the country, although Public Health England is stressing the risk to the public remains low.
