New Chapter for Harboro Rubber as Family Ownership Ends After 130 Years

One of Market Harborough’s oldest companies has entered a new chapter after completing a management buy-out.

Harboro Rubber has ended more than 130 years of family ownership, with Managing Director Michael Fallis-Taylor taking full ownership of the Riverside-based business.

The move sees James Briggs step back from the company founded by his family in 1894, bringing to an end six generations of family ownership.

Harboro Rubber, which employs around 80 people, says it will invest in research and development to expand its product range, including its iconic Dainite shoe sole brand. The company also plans to modernise its operations through new technology, lean manufacturing and a strengthened management team to support future growth.

(L-R) Paul Varley – Broker at Navigate Commercial Finance; Michael Fallis -Taylor – new owner of Harboro Rubber; Sophia Woods – Relationship Manager at HSBC UK; Kate Beretta – Local Director, Leicester and Derby, at HSBC UK; William Van Amersfoot – Finance Manager at Harboro Rubber; and Simon Richards – Invoice Finance Manager at HSBC UK.

Mr Fallis-Taylor said the buy-out marked “an exciting new era” for the business.

He said: “Having spent the last eight years helping to shape its growth, I’ve seen first-hand the dedication of our people, the strength of our partnerships and the reputation we’ve built.

“Taking ownership allows us to write the next chapter in a remarkable six-generation story, combining the heritage, craftsmanship and values that have stood the test of time with a bold vision for the future.”

The company is targeting annual turnover growth of 10% over the next five years as it looks to build on its heritage while exploring new opportunities for expansion.

The buy-out was supported by a seven-figure loan from HSBC UK.

HSBC UK Relationship Manager Sophia Woods said: “The business has an incredible 130-year history and it’s exciting to see that legacy being carried forward by a team that is passionate about its future.

“At HSBC UK, we’re committed to supporting local businesses with ambition and we’re looking forward to being part of the next stage of the Harboro story.”
