MP’s Concerns Delay Decision On New Prison

New concerns about a massive new prison being built near Market Harborough have delayed a decision on if it will go ahead.
They have been raised by Harborough MP Neil O’Brien, who is one of those opposed to the 1700-inmate jail going up on land near HMP Gartree.
The government had been due to rule on the controversial £300m plan by early next month, but now won’t until Mid-May.
Mr O’Brien has given new evidence raised by campaigners to Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, who will have the final say.
It relates to concerns about staffing the new jail, as there are over 50 vacancies at the current Gartree Prison; and the fact the only bus service serving Gartree is under threat as part of a review by Leicestershire County Council.
The Ministry of Justice appealed Harborough District Council’s decision to refuse permission for the jail, prompting a public inquiry to be held last year.
