MP Opposes ‘Super-Council’ Plan

Written by on 18th October 2019

Harborough’s MP says he won’t support plans for a new ‘super authority’ to cover the whole of Leicestershire.

Neil O’Brien has joined the county’s other six Members of Parliament in signing a joint letter to the Leader of the County Council, Nick Rushton, who is spearheading the plan.

If is went ahead all the district councils – including Harborough’s – would be abolished.

The letter states there is no public desire for change and no need for so much time to be spent investigating the idea.

The MPs also say they will not support the change in law needed for the move to go-ahead.

Mr O’Brien spoke to Hfm:

Mr Rushton says he is ‘disappointed’ with the MPs’ views, and the proposals put the council ‘ahead of the game’ as government plans for devolution are expected to be published shortly.

Harborough Council and its Leader, Phil King, are also opposing the idea, together with all the other district councils in Leicestershire.
