Campaigners Told There’ll Be No Re-Think Over Bank Closure

Campaigners have been told there will be no re-think on the decision to close the Halifax in Market Harborough.
They held talks with bosses from the bank to plead for them to think again, following the announcement the branch on The Square will close in October.
Lloyds Banking Group says the decision reflects more people banking online, although campaigners say many still rely on it for face-to-face transactions.
Cllr Phil Knowles organised the virtual meeting between the bank and three of Market Harborough’s district councillors.
He said: “We probed and questioned the decision but there is seemingly little likelihood of any change of mind.
“The Halifax bosses seem to be reliant on the Post Office picking up many of the customer requirements to continue servicing those clients – the big question is, if there is a big take up in that and many need the Post Office can the Town Post Office cope?
“We asked about using Lloyds Bank in Market Harborough, a member of the same group, as some sort of merged site, but they tell us that is virtually impossible as the IT platforms are on the whole not compatible.
“We explored the offer to meet officers from our Economic Team at the Council but that gained little or no traction.”
Lloyds Banking Group has been approached for comment.
