Locals To Suggest Names For New ‘Super-Prison’

The name of a giant new prison near Market Harborough will be decided with the help of locals.

The Ministry of Justice is to invite suggestions on what the 1700-inmate jail should be called through a community consultation, set to launch soon.

The site is currently referred to as ‘Gartree 2’ because of its proximity to the existing Gartree Prison, but the MoJ say it’s important the facility has an identity of its own and the local community have a say.

It’s understood suggested names will be narrowed down to a shortlist of potential options, with a panel of local representatives deciding on the final winner.

The main construction of the £300m pound jail is set to begin in September, as groundworks continue on the site.

The MoJ has also said additional fencing is to be installed around the site and James Smith, Senior Responsible Owner, New Prisons Programme, added: “We continue to listen and respond to feedback received on the works carried out to date.  We are working closely with key stakeholders to address issues and make changes wherever we can. This includes providing additional fencing to help reduce noise and picking up litter.

“We are also keen to create benefits for the community around the prison wherever we can – and we will be working closely with the on-site team to do this as we move into the main works of the project.

“My team also continues to meet regularly with the ward and parish councillors for the new prison site to ensure any arising issues or queries are efficiently managed.”
