Issues With Size Of Cubicles Delay Opening Of New Railway Station Toilets

Issues with the size of cubicles has delayed the opening of new toilets at Market Harborough railway station.

The facilities were due to open on Thursday, but final checks by Network Rail revealed the problem.

The company says it emerged there is not enough room to allow people to walk past when cubicle doors are open.

It will now be another several weeks before the new building on the northbound platform, which houses the toilets and a new waiting room, will be available for passengers.

It is the latest problem to hit the much-delayed project and Cllr Phil Knowles, who has been campaigning for the facilities, has called it ‘beyond belief’ :

Network Rail say changes will now have to be made to the internal layout of the toilets and has apologised for the delay in them opening.

Gary Walsh, East Midlands Route Director for Network Rail, said: “We’re incredibly sorry that there are further delays to the new toilet block and waiting room at Market Harborough station. Providing better facilities for passengers is really important to us, but more work is needed before we can open them safely.

“We realise how frustrating this will be for people in the town and would like to thank passengers for their continued patience.

“We are working hard to deliver these facilities as soon as we can, so that passengers can start to enjoy a better station experience.”

Passengers have been using temporary toilets outside the station for three years, after previous facilities were closed following the major upgrade of the station.
