Harborough Great Big Green Week To Showcase Sustainability

Written by on 8th June 2023

Harborough Big Green Week is to celebrate everything sustainable happening in and around the town.

It will launch at Saturday’s Market Harborough Carnival and a host of events will follow before a ‘Big Green Picnic’ in Welland Park concludes the week on Sunday June 18th.

There will be a ‘Green Street’ at the carnival showground (Symington’s Recreation Ground) which will see around 20 stalls from community groups and other organisations, featuring all things green and sustainable.

Other activities during the week will include Open Community Gardens and allotments, a bus trip to a farm for Open Farm Sunday, cycling and walking trails, arts and crafts events and mindfulness sessions.

Judy Burridge from Sustainable Harborough, is helping to organise it all and spoke to HFM:

Harborough District Council is supporting the week and will host an open meeting on Thursday 15 June, from 7-8.30pm, in the Symington Building, for people to find out more about how it is implementing the Climate Emergency Action Plan.

There will also be a drop-in exhibition held throughout the week (Monday 12 June, Tuesday 13 June, Thursday 15 June and Friday 16 June) on how the council and Sustainable Harborough Community are working to tackle climate emergency – also in the Symington Building, from 10am to 6pm.

Another event the council is putting on is a short course for businesses to help them understand carbon reduction and access support to reach their goals – this will take place at the Harborough Innovation Centre, on Wednesday 14 June, from 11am to noon.

Cllr Darren Woodiwiss, Harborough District Council’s Cabinet lead for Environmental and Climate Change, said: “We have some exciting events and activities planned to celebrate sustainability in Harborough district.

“As a council, we recognise the looming effects the climate emergency will have on our residents and continue to review the actions we can take to mitigate climate change and its affects within the district.”
