Hallaton Treasure Temporarily Removed From Display

The Hallaton Treasure has been temporarily taken off show at Harborough Museum so improvements can be made to display cases.

The haul, including 5,000 gold and silver coins and a helmet, was discovered by a metal detectorist in 2000, marking one of the most important Iron Age discoveries ever seen in the UK.

Leicestershire County Council says it is carrying out the maintenance at the museum within the Symington Building, to ensure the Treasure can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Cllr Christine Radford, cabinet member for heritage, leisure and arts, said: “Harborough Museum is a wonderful showcase of the history and people of this vibrant market town and its surroundings.

“These improvement works are important as they aim to protect the artefacts and improve an internationally important gallery in the museum.

“The museum attracts visitors of all ages from within the county and far beyond, and we get so much feedback from them about what a gem it is.”

The work will also allow an additional five cheek-pieces, which have never been shown to the public before, to go on display at a later date.

The Cut and Create exhibition in the temporary gallery will also not be available to view while the improvements take place.
