Go-Ahead Given For New £5m Aldi Store In Market Harborough

The go-ahead has been given for a new Aldi supermarket to be built in Market Harborough.

Councillor approved the £5m plan at a meeting last night, paving the way for the discount retailer to re-locate from its current base on Springfield Street, to bigger premises on Rockingham Road, creating 15 additional jobs.

The new store will be built on land at the Gores Lane junction, currently occupied by Glenmere Timber and seven business starter units will also form part of the development.

The plan, including a 129-space car park, was unanimously approved by Harborough District Council’s planning committee.

Rival supermarket Waitrose objected to the plan, saying the new store would reduce shopper trips into the town centre, but the meeting heard an expert retail study concluded there would be no substantial impact on the town centre.

Kyra Williams, President of Market Harborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce, is welcoming the decision on the new store and creating space for other businesses:

A spokesperson for Aldi told HFM: “Aldi is delighted that Harborough District Council has approved our plans to build a new store on Rockingham Road in Market Harborough.

“Our existing store will continue to provide high-quality low-cost goods until our new store is open.

“We have not set a date for opening but we will begin preparation works as soon as possible, working with the local council and residents.

“We look forward to providing a bigger, more modern and accessible food store for the people of Market Harborough.”

Robin Williams, property director for Aldi in the Midlands, spoke at the planning meeting:

Glenmere Timber will continue to operate from its second site in Market Harborough.
