Work to improve fire safety at Gartree Prison is to take place at a cost of around £9m.

Harborough District Council has granted planning permission so the Ministry of Justice can replace ageing staircases in three wings as part of the upgrades.

The work, due to carried out over the next year, will also include ventilation improvements and upgrades to fire alarms, electrical systems and an uninterrupted power supply.

A spokesperson for the MoJ said: “As part of our ongoing work to make prisons safer we are carrying out important upgrades at HMP Gartree.”
