The discovery of fossilised remains of a prehistoric ‘sea dragon’ at Rutland Water have been hailed as ‘unprecedented’.
The Ichthyosaur, that lived 250-million years ago and has a skeleton of around 10 metres, is the largest and most complete fossil of its kind ever found in the UK.
It was discovered during a routine draining of a lagoon at the Rutland Water nature reserve by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, in February 2021.
Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that roamed the seas while dinosaurs walked on land.
