Footbridge Closed in Market Harborough Amid Safety Concerns

A footbridge over the river in Market Harborough has been closed following concerns about its condition and safety.
The wooden structure opposite the railway station on Rockingham Road is privately owned and had fallen into a poor state of repair.

However, the popular route is still passable for pedestrians, who can use the stairs and walk through the nearby car park, although access is now difficult for cyclists and people with pushchairs.
Temporary measures had been put in place last week to cover some of the holes, with further repair work now expected to follow.
Parts of the bridge had rotted away
Parts of the bridge had rotted away, leaving holes and raised wooden planks, with some sections of the structure also appearing unstable, prompting calls for the bridge to be closed until repairs could be carried out.
Harborough District Council had previously raised concerns with those responsible for the bridge and urged urgent action.
The council has also said it is looking into what further action may be available within its legal powers, recognising the concerns raised by members of the public.
