Firefighters Called After Smoke Seen Coming From Manhole

Firefighters were called after smoke was seen billowing out of a manhole cover at a busy Market Harborough road junction last night.

They found water was entering an underground electrical box at the junction of St Mary’s Road/Kettering Road and Clarence Street.

Part of the area was cordoned off until engineers from Western Power arrived to deal with the issue.

A crew from Market Harborough Fire Station were called just after 5.30pm and spent nearly two hours at the scene.

Electricity to 96 properties in the area had to be switched off for 50 minutes from 6.45pm, while the electrical unit was isolated.

A Western Power Distribution spokesperson told Hfm: “This involved a link box which water had entered and we had to cut supply to some properties while we isolated it.

“Teams are back on-site today replacing the box.

“We apologise for the inconvenience the incident caused.”
