A fire at Waitrose in Market Harborough led to the closure of the store for several hours today.

It broke out in an electrical cupboard on the first floor of the building on Springfield Street just after 10.15am.

The store was evacuated after the fire alarm went off and no-one was injured.

Firefighters were sent to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze, which had left the area heavily smoke-logged.

An electrical fault is thought to have started the fire.

A spokesperson for Waitrose Market Harborough told HFM: “We  had to temporarily close due to a small fire in the back of our store.

“Thankfully nobody was injured and we’re grateful for the local fire brigade, and our Partners, who responded quickly.

“We’ve since reopened and appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding.”

The store re-opened at around 4.30pm.

Fire crews from Desborough and Lutterworth attended the incident.
