Final Approval For Harborough’s Food Waste Collections

Weekly food waste collections across Harborough have been officially approved, with the rollout set for November.

The scheme, introduced as a government requirement, will cover more than 45,000 homes, with households provided with two new caddies to help separate and store food waste for collection.

Under the new service, food waste will be collected weekly, while general waste and recycling will continue to be collected fortnightly.

As part of the launch, households will receive a 7-litre indoor caddy, a 23-litre kerbside caddy, and one roll of bin liners.

Collected food waste will be sent to an anaerobic digestion plant, where it will be converted into biofertiliser and renewable energy.

The council’s Cabinet gave the final green light for the new scheme at a meeting last night.

Cllr Darren Woodiwiss, Cabinet Lead for Climate Change and Neighbourhood Services, said: “The introduction of weekly food waste collections is an important step forward in helping residents recycle more and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

“By separating food waste, we can ensure it is put to good use, generating renewable energy and valuable biofertiliser, while also supporting our wider environmental and climate objectives.
We are committed to making this new service as straightforward as possible and will provide the support needed to help households make the most of it.”
