Desborough Carnival returns today with parade and family fun

Desborough is gearing up for one of its biggest community events of the year as the annual carnival takes place today.

Organisers are hoping people will turn out in force for the event, which begins with a parade assembling on Dunkirk Avenue at 12.30pm before setting off at 1.30pm.

This year’s procession will be led by members of Havelock School, who will act as the carnival court, while the Zion Christian Band will perform during the parade and later at the Recreation Ground.

A packed afternoon of family entertainment will follow, including live music from two local bands, bouncy castles, children’s rides, craft stalls, hook-a-duck, a lucky dip and a shooting gallery.

A spokesperson for the organising committee said last year’s parade was the biggest the town had seen for many years and they hoped this year’s would be “as big if not bigger”.

They added: “We want to encourage as many people as possible to join in the fun of our parade and entertain the crowds who will line the streets, as Desborough people never fail in coming out in force to support our carnival.”

Temporary road closures will be in place on Dunkirk Avenue between Roman Way and Ise Vale Avenue from midday until 2pm, with rolling closures used as the parade progresses.

Money raised during the day will be distributed to local community groups at the carnival’s annual general meeting in the autumn.
