Cuts To Services On The Cards As Council Faces Cash Crisis
Written by HFM News on 27th June 2022
Leicestershire County Council is warning of potential cuts to services including highways maintenance, waste sites and bus routes it supports.
It is having to draw-up new proposals to save millions of pounds due to surging inflation and other national and global factors, which have seen its costs rocket.
Previously the council calculated there would be an £8m gap between what it needs to spend and its income next year, but that is now been widened to around £20.
It is also likely a number of planned non-essential capital improvement schemes will have to be paused.
Cllr Nick Rushton, Leader of the council, called the situation ‘frightening’ when it was discussed at a meeting, saying the public needs to be told of the impending situation:
Leicestershire is the worst funded county council in the country and the authority is continuing to lobby local MPs and press the Government for fairer funding.
A progress update on the extra savings is to be outlined in September.
