Written by on 25th August 2021

A rapid rise in Coronavirus cases among young people has seen the infection rate across Harborough climb to the 25th highest in England.

The number aged 17 to 21 testing positive is more than double the national average and cases in the 11 to 16 age group are also nearly twice the England figure.

It is thought parties following GCSE and A-Level results have contributed to the increase.

Mike Sandys is Director of Public Health at Leicestershire County Council:

The overall infection rate across Harborough per 100,000 people is 419.7, up from 343.3 last week, with 401 new cases in the past seven days, placing the district 25th in a list of 312 areas of England with the highest infection rate.

For the 17 to 21 age group, the rate is 1875 per 100,000 people (England average 876) and for the 11-16 age group the rate is 862 per 100,000 people (England average 443)
