County Council Confirms Council Tax Rise

Leicestershire County Council has approved it budget, meaning a rise is in its share of council tax by 4.99% – the maximum permitted by government.

It means residents in Band D homes across the Harborough will pay an extra £5.59 a month to the authority, which is responsible for things like roads and adult social care, with the County Council element of bills totaling £1,410.78.

Councillor Byron Rhodes, cabinet member for finance, said: “Asking residents to pay more is not where we want to be.

“But if this increase was not taken, service cuts would be the inevitable consequence – and higher Council Tax increases were broadly supported by respondents to our recent budget survey. It is the only significant lever available to us to raise extra money to fund vital services whilst balancing the budget.”

Harborough District Council is set to increase its share of bills by £5 a year and Leicestershire Police by £15 a year.
