Council Urged To Condemn ‘Family Farm Tax’

Harborough District Council is being urged to condemn the government’s decision to change inheritance tax for family farms.

A 20% levy is to be imposed on those worth over a million pounds from next year.

The move has prompted anger from farmers across the area, with some travelling to London last month to join a mass protest outside Parliament.

A motion will be considered at tonight’s meeting of the Full Council urging the council to express its ‘dismay’ at the decision and to show its support for local family farms.

If backed by a majority of councillors, the authority’s Leader will write to the government to express concern and urge a re-think.

The Government insist only the wealthiest of farmers will will pay and it must take ‘difficult decisions’ to invest in the schools and services those in rural communities rely on.
