Council To Push Ahead With Garden Waste Charges

Written by on 8th September 2022

The plan to charge residents served by North Northamptonshire Council £40 a year to have garden waste bins emptied is back on.

The move was put on hold in July following a storm of protest – but is now set to be approved at a meeting next week.

The charge is set to be approved next week

People living in places previously served by Kettering Borough Council have always had their garden waste bins empties for free, but the unitary authority, launched last year, wants to ‘harmonise’ the service, as charges are already made in other areas it inherited.

Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council, said: “We believe providing a consistent service paid for by those who use it is the fairest way of providing kerbside collections for green waste.

“Furthermore, there are still options for those who choose to opt-out making it the best way of providing a unified North Northants service.”

If approved the charge will come into force from next April.
