Council Set To Declare ‘Nature Emergency’

Written by on 7th October 2025

Harborough District Council is set to declare a Nature Emergency next week.

The move would expand on its 2019 Climate Emergency to include nature recovery efforts.

The declaration would see the creation of a new action plan focused on biodiversity, climate resilience, and key projects like the rewilding of 130 acres near Market Harborough.

The move would also align with national efforts, with over 100 councils declaring a Nature Emergency at the request of the Woodland Trust.

The Leicestershire and Rutland Nature Recovery Strategy published earlier this year highlights that Leicestershire, and particularly Harborough have become nature-depleted and there is much work to do to improve and protect nature within the Harborough District.

Councillors will consider making the declaration at a meeting on Monday.
