Council ‘Reviewing’ Plan For Housing On Long-Standing Derelict Site In Desborough

Plans to build 40 new council houses on a long-standing derelict site in the centre of Desborough are being reviewed.

North Northamptonshire Council says further work is being carried out on the potential cost for the development on the former Lawrence’s Factory site.

It was initially valued at £9.5m, with the hope government-body Homes England would help fund the scheme, which would incorporate the existing factory building.

Cllr Matt Binley, Executive Member for Housing, Communities and Levelling Up said: “Further work has been done recently on the potential cost for the housing development, given the current global financial climate and we’re still reviewing all of the options for this site and finalising our due diligence.

“Once this has been completed this will be passed to the relevant decisions makers.”

The plan for homes on the site of the former shoe factory, which has stood derelict for over 20 years, was put on hold after Aldi expressed interest in building a supermarket there, but the retailer pulled out of talks last year.
