Council Handed £160k To Help Re-Open Leisure Centres

The District Council has been handed £160,000 to support the reopening of Leisure Centres in Market Harborough, Lutterworth and Broughton Astley.

The money has come from the government’s National Leisure Recovery Fund, to support venues which have been badly hit financially due to enforced closures because of the coronavirus lockdown.

The centres are due to reopen on April 12th, with strict operational measures in place to keep users safe.

Cllr Simon Whelband, Harborough District Council’s Cabinet lead for well-being and communities, said: “The national lockdowns have had a huge impact on the leisure sector and created a significant financial challenges, so this funding is very welcome.

“It is important residents are able to improve their physical and mental health, through exercise and physical activity, and we will be working closely with our leisure centres to ensure this funding supports their recovery and increases opportunities for residents.”

The government cash comes after the District Council last year provided financial support to Everyone Active, the operator of Harborough Leisure Centre and Lutterworth Sports Centre, to allow them to reopen following the first lockdown.
