Charitable Donation After Roadworks ‘Shambles’

National Grid has donated £1,000 to a Market Harborough charity after work in the town earlier this year was branded ‘a shambles.’

The electricity distribution firm has given the money to Harborough Youth and Community Trust.

Work to renew electricity cables led to the closure of a well-used alleyway between Welland Park and Stuart Road for six weeks in the summer.

The work was supposed by completed by the time students went back to school after the summer break, but overran.

The closure led to lengthy diversion routes for pedestrians and caused inconvenience for those living near-by, with Harborough MP Neil O’Brien forced to intervene.

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson said: “We know that our infrastructure works can be disruptive at times – and that this footpath closure raised concerns in the local community.

“As part of our sponsorship and donations programme, we have made a donation to Harborough Youth and Community Trust.

“The Trust were nominated by our local team, who are aware of the fantastic work they do in empowering young people and helping them fulfil their potential.

“We are pleased to be able to support such a wonderful asset to the town.”

National Grid was fined by Leicestershire County Council for not completing the work within the specified time.
