Campaigners Intensify Fight Over ‘New Town’ Plan

Campaigners are intensifying their opposition after plans for a new town of 4,000 homes in Leicestershire progressed.

Developers Urban & Civic and Homes England have submitted initial proposals for 931 acres of land north of Great Glen and east of Oadby.

The land at Stretton Hall is identified for development in Harborough District Council’s proposed Local Plan, which maps out where new homes could be built.

The scheme has sparked significant concern, with campaign group Stop The New Town highlighting the potential impact on roads, local infrastructure, and the surrounding countryside.

More than 2,300 objections have already been lodged with the council.

Planning documents show the site straddles the boundary between Harborough District Council and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, with identical planning applications expected to be submitted to both authorities.

Developers say the land has been earmarked under the government’s New Homes Accelerator Programme, which aims to deliver 1.5 million new homes during the current parliamentary term.

If approved, construction could take place between 2028 and 2045.
