A by-election could be held in Fleckney following the resignation of a long-serving Conservative councillor from Harborough District Council.

Stephen Bilbie, who served the Fleckney ward for over a decade and was a former Chairman of the council, has stepped down after moving out of the area.

A vote will go ahead if two local electors formally request a poll.

Steve told HFM he was proud to serve on the council and thoroughly enjoyed his time representing residents.

He said one of the highlights of his time as Chairman was welcoming Their Royal Highnesses, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, to Market Harborough during a royal visit in 2021.

Cllr Simon Whelband, Leader of the Conservative group, said: “Steve will be deeply missed at the Council after more than a decade of dedicated service as a councillor.

“He cared passionately about the people of Fleckney and the surrounding villages in his ward, always putting their needs first.

“During the pandemic, he also took on the demanding role of the Council’s ceremonial head – a responsibility he carried out with great commitment in the most challenging of times.

“On behalf of the Conservative Group at Harborough, I extend our heartfelt thanks and wish Steve and his wife every happiness for the future.”
