Building work is due to start within the next few weeks, with the new store set to open in spring 2023, creating 40 jobs.

Residents have been calling for another major food retailer for many years and Sainsbury’s received ‘overwhelming support’ from people who responded to a public consultation last year, when the idea of the new supermarket was first announced.

Cllr David Howes, North Northamptonshire Council member for the Desborough Ward, told HFM: “The majority of people who live in Desborough and the surrounding villages are in complete support of a new Sainsbury’s coming to the town of Desborough.

People can already see activity on the site with equipment arriving. People I speak to are genuinely getting excited as we move closer to the construction being started onsite and the forthcoming opening.

“Sainsbury’s have confirmed that they will be contacting surrounding properties to keep them informed on the construction work and I shall try to keep people updated through my Facebook page: facebook.com/cllrdavidahowes

The new store will have a 126-space car park and an Argos click-and-collect service.

Sainsbury’s say it will also make a positive difference in the community, through initiatives like its Food Donation Programme.
