Police are appealing for witnesses after a six-year-old boy died in a crash near Lutterworth.

The youngster was a passenger in a car which was involved in a head-on collision with a van on the A426 Rugby Road in Cotesbach, just before 1pm yesterday.

He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the car was seriously injured and taken to hospital for treatment, although the van driver was not hurt.

Officers say the red Chrysler Crossfire car had just come off the Gibbet roundabout at the A5 junction and was heading along Rugby Road, towards Lutterworth, when the collision occurred with a grey Volkswagen Caddy van, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

Leicestershire Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage.

A spokesperson said: “Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured it on video recording equipment in their vehicles.

“We know there were a number of people in the area at the time.

“We would particularly like to speak to the driver of a white 4×4 style vehicle and a woman who was also driving in the area.

“Both left the scene before officers arrived and they may be able to help with our investigation.”

Anyone who can help is asked to contact PC 212 Suki Sahota on 101 or via www.leics.police.uk, quoting crime number 23*484442.
