Aldi Pulls Out Of Talks About New Store In Desborough

Aldi has pulled out of talks about building a new store on a long-standing derelict site in Desborough.

The discount retailer had expressed interest in the former Lawrence’s shoe factory site off Harborough Road, which has stood derelict for over 20 years.

The company says it would be unlikely to gain planning permission due to various restrictions on the site, including Historic England wanting the main building to be retained.

North Northamptonshire Council, who own the land, is also considering a plan for houses on the site, which would incorporate the building.

Cllr David Howes, who has been involved in discussions with Aldi, spoke to HFM:

Aldi hasn’t ruled out looking at alternative places in for a store, as previously identified the town as somewhere it would like to open.

An spokesperson for the company said: “Aldi has ambitious plans for expanding its network of stores across the UK.

“We now have over 900 stores providing access to high quality products at great value prices. We are continuously looking for new sites in the area, but we do not comment publicly on specific locations.

“If and when we secure sites for potential development, we consult widely with local stakeholders and the community.”
