Concerns continue over Clarence Street one-way system plans

Residents in Market Harborough have raised ongoing concerns about the direction of a planned one-way system, ahead of its introduction later this year.
Under a trial scheme, drivers will only be able to travel northbound along Clarence Street from St Mary’s Road towards Albert Road. However, some residents say they believe traffic should instead flow in the opposite direction, warning it could lead to congestion on nearby roads.
The comments were made at a drop-in event at Harborough Market, where Leicestershire County Council set out details of the wider £2 million transport scheme.
Under a trial scheme, drivers will only be able to travel northbound along Clarence Street from St Mary’s Road.
Problems with two-way traffic on the narrow street have been described as a long-standing issue, with vehicles including buses reportedly mounting pavements and damage caused to parked cars.
While residents generally agree a one-way system is needed, the proposed direction remains a point of contention.
Senior Project Manager Andy Jackson from Leicestershire County Council told HFM the council is continuing to listen to residents’ views:

The one-way system forms part of a wider package of improvements aimed at boosting safety for cyclists and pedestrians along Rockingham Road.
The wider project will also include five new side-road priority crossings on raised tables with illuminated studs, at locations including the train station car park entrance, Halfords and PureGym retail park, Riverside, The Furlongs and Ashley Way.
The scheme is due to start in August and will run through to March 2027.
