Emergency Incident Behind Widespread Power Cut Across Market Harborough Area

The cause of a widespread power cut affecting Market Harborough and surrounding villages this morning has been traced to an emergency incident in Corby.

A man was airlifted to hospital after reportedly falling from an electricity pylon near Bideford Square shortly after 10am.

The incident triggered a major fault on the high-voltage electricity network, with the brief outage forcing some shops in Market Harborough to close temporarily.

The outage also affected Desborough and villages including Kibworth, Fleckney, Dingley and Hallaton.

Emergency services at the scene of the incident

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called shortly after 10.15am this morning to reports of a person that had fallen from an electricity pylon in Bideford Square in Corby.”

They added that firefighters from Corby attended the scene to assist other emergency services before the casualty was left in the care of the air ambulance.

National Grid deployed a helicopter to the scene of the incident

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police added: “This incident happened just after 10.15am this morning in Bideford Square when we received a report with concern for the welfare of a man. He has been taken to hospital.”

No further details surrounding the incident have been released.

Some shops closed after tills stopped working

Shops including B&M and TGJones in Market Harborough were forced to close temporarily after tills failed to restart immediately following the outage, but both reopened within half an hour.

A spokesperson for National Grid Electricity Distribution confirmed the power cut was linked to the incident in Corby and added: “A temporary fault on our high voltage network caused a very brief interruption to power supplies in and around Market Harborough, with most customers experiencing a loss of power for around 30 seconds.”

They said supplies were restored automatically within seconds through built-in safety systems.
