Man, 93, Died After Hours Of “Torture”, Jury Told

A vulnerable man died months after being “savagely” beaten over a prolonged period by his friend who was “suffering from paranoia caused by cannabis consumption”, a court has heard.

Martin Glynn, 93, was attacked at a flat in Gold Street, Desborough, in September 2024 and died at Kettering General Hospital on 26 December that year.

Samuel Field, 40, formerly of Gold Street, denies murder, as well as manslaughter, grievous bodily harm with intent and grievous bodily harm.

At Northampton Crown Court, prosecutors said Field was a “ticking time-bomb” in the days and hours leading up to the attack.

Prosecutor Adrian Langdale KC told the jury: “Mr Glynn, unfortunately, walked into that ticking time-bomb.”

The court heard Mr Glynn, from Northampton, was punched, kicked, stamped on and strangled in what was described as a “senseless attack” at Field’s home.

The prosecution say the assault lasted around 28 hours, during which Field repeatedly attacked the victim and subjected him to what was described as a “recorded interrogation” about an “imagined conspiracy”.

Mr Langdale said the brutality was “entirely pointless, entirely unjustified”, and alleged Glynn was effectively “tortured”.

The jury was told Mr Glynn never left hospital or care home care following the attack until his death.
