The two occupants of the car, both teenagers, were sadly declared dead at the scene.

Four people travelling in the minibus – a white Fiat Ducato – were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver has since been discharged, while three women remain in hospital.

The motorway has been closed in both directions since the collision and is expected to remain shut for several hours while forensic investigations continue.

Leicestershire Police is appealing for witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who was driving on Gilmorton Lane or the M1 near junction 20, in either direction, at around 1.30pm.

Anyone with dashcam footage, or who saw either vehicle before the collision, is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 308 of 10 April, or report online via the Leicestershire Police website.
