Last Day to Comment on Council Shake-Up Plans

Today is the last chance to have your say on the future of councils in Leicestershire.

The government consultation is exploring plans to scrap the current two-tier system of county and district councils in favour of new unitary authorities.

The district and borough councils’ proposal

Three options are being considered – Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council support creating two authorities, with the city proposing an expanded boundary.

Meanwhile, district and borough councils favour three authorities, which would see Harborough join a new South Leicestershire council.

Under the county council’s proposal, Leicestershire and Rutland would be brought together under a single authority.

The changes – ordered by government – are aimed at simplifying local government and reducing costs.

A final decision is expected by the summer, with any new system likely to come into effect from 2028.
